Jazeela Paintings

I am an engineer turned CFO, a painter, and a trained singer. I hold an MBA, MSc in Financial Engineering, and PhD besides my Engineering degree. I hail from Kerala, a beautiful coastal state in India, blessed with immense unique scenic beauty, a great inspiration for artists like me.

Painting was just a hobby for me until 15 years back. I took my first set of coloring brushes in my hand only after my children grew up and entered college.   But I haven’t looked back since then. The myriad colors of nature and the nuanced atmospheric moods were my greatest inspiration to pursue painting further. As a finance professional, though I had a busy career that kept me away from the world of art, I continued exploring its potential for the last 15 years.  Eventually, the journey of exploration and learning from mistakes helped me in choosing art creation as a full-time career. I remember with gratitude an immensely talented colleague, a fine watercolor artist himself who inspired me to revive my creative spirit.

My Art Journey...

It was a journey that I undertook alone, teaching myself the techniques and methods through hundreds of video lessons and paintings of maestros in the field.  The medium is under-celebrated in the world of art often, but its translucence and luminance coupled with the ability to produce subtle expressions and moods in minimal strokes amaze me every moment. It holds unlimited potential to unleash your creativity. The medium does the work if you can understand its language. It can be intimidating at times as you tame the medium to produce painterly works.

My focus is on capturing the streaks of natural light, shadows, and their play in creating the mood of nature. I aim to experiment with the mysterious ways of the washes that flow into each other settling randomly, glazing with layers, and layers of transparent paint to intelligently achieve the depth of the shapes and use of the white of the paper in defining light. I am enthused by the movements in the streets in different parts of the world in different cultures, traditions, and settings, and more so with the life they contain with their various emotions and actions that present very interesting scenarios. I employ a semi-abstract style in painting, sometimes bordering on the realistic depiction of the scenes. I tend to adopt a looser style of painting these days, that brings out the natural flow and behavior of watercolors in producing a magical feel.

I have created a bunch of beautiful landscapes, cityscapes, and portrait work named the ‘Colors of Life’ series. I hail from Kerala in India, a land of immense natural beauty. Some of my paintings are based on the paddy fields, backwaters, beaches, and streets of Kerala. These landscapes have a unique color pattern with very bright greens, terracotta colors,  muddy oranges, and browns.

My portrait in soft pastels (size 3’ x 2‘)  of the late HM Sultan Qaboos of Oman was sold to a public sector company in 2018 within 2 weeks of its completion.

I have sold many paintings through exhibitions. Recently I did a solo exhibition of 80 of my Watercolor paintings at Durbar Hall Art Gallery at the Kerala State Lalithakala Academy, Kochi.
